Judges

Everything you need to prepare for judging at a CISL meet.

Welcome, Speech Judges

The Christian Interscholastic Speech League (CISL) knows how much it matters for students to have confident, capable and well-prepared judges in every category. The resources on this page are here to give you a solid foundation before you attend an event.

As a speech judge, you will listen to and evaluate speeches across a range of events, each with its own rules and requirements. Materials will be handed to you at the meet, but we encourage you to set aside time to review the documents below before the meet.

If you have any questions, please reach out to us at [email protected].

Please review these forms prior to your meet. Contact your coach if you have any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions for Judges

What does a speech judge do at a CISL meet?
You listen to and evaluate speeches across the different events. Each event has its own rules and requirements, and the proper materials will be provided to you at the meet.
Should I review anything before the meet?
Yes. The league recommends reviewing the judge documents on this page before the meet, including the General Judges Information and the guide to writing a critique a student can use.
What is a critique, and why does it matter?
A critique is the written feedback you give a student after their speech. The sample critiques on this page show what to do and what not to do so your feedback is genuinely useful to the student.
Where can I find the event rules and judge forms?
Event rules and judge event forms are available as downloadable PDFs on the Coaches and Contestants pages of this site, and the judge-specific documents are linked on this page.
Who do I contact if I have questions about judging?
If you have any questions, contact the league at [email protected], or contact your coach.
